Ian Russell is the longest standing member of Malcolm Orso’s crew, having joined after Mick’s death and taking Malcolm’s place as First Mate. He is first cousin to his Captain, but his Scottish accent is much milder due to his having moved around a lot during his youth.

Ian is responsible, analytical, and a natural planner, taking care of all the ship’s administrative and logistical needs. His loyalty and unquestioning support of his Captain shows his deep respect of chain of command, and his trust in Malcolm.

While he often has his own opinions on how things should be done, he rarely pushes forward without consulting others, and is most protective of Salayah, his fiancé and eventual bride. His mechanical nature is put to use in support of Malcolm’s inventions, as is his love of rock climbing and outdoor activities. He is supportive of Salayah’s role as Human Representative to the Lucarn Liaison, but only after having evaluated all safety protocols and standards.

His calm and steady nature reassure Kit (and Malcolm) that no matter what, he’s got their backs.
