Santus hails from Texas in North America, Earth, with his deep southern accent being the most immediate giveaway as to his origin. He is the largest man aboard the Avoch Flame/Criostal Geal, and his size initially intimidates Kit so much that she cannot hold eye contact. His kind nature, however, quickly puts her at ease, and his fatherly behavior convinces her that she need not fear him.

Although he is patient and non-confrontational, his hot southern blood will boil when he feels an injustice is being done, and his protective feelings towards Kit (whom he affectionately calls “Miss Kitti”) lead him to butt heads with other crew members, including his Captain. He is fearless, capable, and incredibly knowledgeable about the inner workings of starships, adapting quickly to new technology, namely the Lucarn ships found on their home world within the Lucent Nebula.

Santus’ emotional intelligence leads him to trust Kit more readily than even Malcolm, and he keeps his head during intense confrontations. His friendship with Vik Teller is almost immediate, as the two bond over small starship mechanics, and their shared experience as widowers. Despite his thick, southern blood, Santus is easily the most calm and steady personality among the command crew.
